We made some progress but there's more to do!
Fiscal Successes:
1. Took advantage of low interest rates and successfully saved tax payers over $21 million in Mello Roos taxes.
2. Instituted Digital Schools to automate payroll and other HR
3. Increased reserves from 2% to almost 10%.
4. Purchased 28 electric buses utilizing grants to save 70%
5. In-depth study of our infrastructure to allow for long term specific planning
Safety Success:
1. Worked with Guidepost to study each school site and implement a districtwide schoolwide safety plan.
2. Almost doubled our student services with counselors and other resources
Career and Technical Education Success:
1. Increased classes available and accepted by Palomar College to over 300.
2. 50 classes that are articulated with the college credit being taught on campuses.
3. Offer 32 APs in many subject areas.
4. Winner of the CSBA Golden Bell Award for CTE
Truths
1. As a public entity we were handcuffed to mandate social distancing and masks. There was not an option and keeping schools open was most important. Districts that voted to oppose, quickly reversed their positions such as Ramona. In response to this, I joined the Coalition for Local Control to influence Sacramento so local districts can make local decisions. This coalition remains today ready to act. We were the first unified district to make mask optional the day we were permitted
2. I do not support CRT. California schools will be mandated to have an ethnic studies requirement for graduation. We need community involvement to develop the best curriculum so diverse ethnic groups are celebrated for their contribution but other groups are not considered inherently racist.
3. As an involved parent, it is paramount to give parents a voice. Mask mandates on public property and social distancing forced schools to close access. These mandates are over and must never be allowed to happen again. I am 100% against a COVID vaccine mandate for children.
4. Voting record. I encourage you to review my voting record and ask questions. Much thought went into my votes. With the chaos of the pandemic, quickly changing goal posts, and the reckless overreach of Sacramento, I believe the Board responded as best we could.
5. We had at risk students on our campuses as early as the fall of 2020. We were the first unified district to have kids back on campuses with the ABAB and Concurrent Models which became models across California.
6. Our test scores are 50% higher than San Diego Unified. Our language scores did not decrease and math only decreased by 3%. We are using targeted resources to remediate and have high expectations.
Do not get PUSD confused with San Diego Unified.
More about Career and Technical Education Opportunities
I have always been passionate about Career and Technical Education (known as Vocational to some). This area lost its focus as the district turned to College Prep. Maintaining high standards for college preparedness is still paramount. However, I am so excited to see the pendulum swing and the importance of various pathways for student success coming to the forefront.
With community involvement, the school's job is to prepare student for what's next. For some, this is a prestigious university, for others it is working with their hands and laying the foundation for a career in a technical field, for some its about the arts. We need to excite students and show them different ways to achieve success...success on their terms.
My experiences in our community have given me a strong foundation to be an asset to the Board. Reviewing the City of Poway's Budget with each department led me to understand the various department's needs and how to evaluate the best use of resources. Working on many committees, I know how to listen and evaluate input to move items forward to successful goal completion. I also completed the CSBA's Master's in Governance to understand the best practices and nuances of School Board Governance.
Growing a company from just one to twelve agents with 2021 sales over $80 million, managing almost 200 tenants and owning a building in the Poway Business Park. I understand the many aspects of small business and the importance of putting a dollar to the best use and coaching people to be their highest potential.
Lastly, being a mother to three Poweigans has given me the opportunities to work with many fantastic teachers, my kids' friends and their families, and the many community activities that enrich student's lives.
