We must Focus on the Fundamentals
My experience as an educator, business owner, coach, board chair, community and school volunteer, and mother living in Poway Unified School District for 28 years, has led me to these five priorities:
First, we must insist on Academic Excellence. All students must be challenged with relevant academics so they are prepared for further learning after graduation.
Second, Developing a Parent Bill of Rights. It is job of the schools to educate transparently because our parents are what make PUSD so strong. Many families make sacrifices to live in PUSD. From supporting teachers and volunteering, to providing tutoring for their students when needed, our community is the backbone of PUSD.
Third, building Pathways for Success. Beyond simply encouraging high-achieving students academically, we must provide necessary resources to maintain student interest with various Career Technology Education (Vocational) opportunities to ensure success after graduation.
Fourth, providing a Safe Environment both from outside and inside campus threats.
Finally, Fiscal Transparency and procedures so resources are used to their highest potential.
As a high school science teacher, president of the Poway Sports Association lighting Arbolitos and turfing Meadowbrook and Valley, and Chair of the City of Poway Budget and Parks and Rec Committees, I worked hard to listen to, and address, the needs of my community.
As a small business owner, I understand what it is like to have a lot going on and still pay attention to detail.
As a school board member, I support our parents, teachers, staff as they help our students achieve all their goals.
